5 COOL Facts About Air Conditioning

Just 20 years before air conditioning came along, electric fans were invented by a man named Schuyler Wheeler. Around the same time, another man, Philip Diehl, developed the world’s first electric ceiling fan. These fans were in popular use when the air conditioning unit was invented, and they continued to be the preferred form of cooling down until air conditioning units became more affordable. This is because electric fans do cool down the body, if not to the same extent as an air conditioner. They create something called a windchill effect, which allows the body to cool itself down.

2. President Hoover Air-Conditioned the Oval Office

When he was in office from 1929 to 1933, Herbert Hoover had air conditioning installed in the Oval Office inside the White House. The cost of the addition was $30,000, which equates to over $460,000 today. To put that into perspective, the average income of someone in 1930 was around $1,300. If an average person wanted to install a unit of that magnitude in their own home, they would’ve had to work for about 23 years just to pay for it. To make matters even more shocking, this expense came at the start of the Great Depression.

3. Heat-Related Deaths Have Fallen Because of A/C

As air conditioning became more affordable and widespread, more people were able to cool down before their bodies overheated. As a result, fewer people died during heatwaves.

4. Willis Carrier Invented the Air Conditioning Unit

It may be hard to believe, but the air conditioner wasn’t invented to cool a room down. At the Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing and Publishing Company, there was a problem with the ink alignment as a result of the humidity in the air. Because there was no way to control how humid it would be inside on any given day, the paper that they printed on would contract and expand, causing inconsistencies in the print.

Willis Carrier sought to fix that problem with the invention of the air conditioner. His air conditioner took the warm, humid air in and made it contract in its system so that it retained the moisture and cooler, drier air was sent back out. Even today, that’s how many air conditioning units function. His successful invention was installed and began operating on July 17, 1902. Within a few years, Carrier created his own company to meet the demand for air conditioners.
